Apiece Apart: Travel-Ready Women's Clothing Made in New York

Laura Cramer and Starr Hout met at NYU and launched Apiece Apart in 2008, after a road trip through West Texas turned into an argument for a wardrobe that fits in a bag, but still covers a whole life. That idea still stands where foundation pieces and statement pieces are cut to work together. A wide trouser can sit as comfortably under a silk top or under a heavy knit, and a small number of pieces can stretch much further than most. Natural fibers are the centerpiece, with silk, linen, cotton, and fine wool chosen for how they wear over years rather than how they look on a hanger. Apiece Apart also puts genuine effort into plastic reduction, working toward compostable alternatives at both the garment and shipping stage, rather than treating it as a talking point.

We keep Apiece Apart at KIWI because the clothes solve problems in a closet instead of adding to it. A dress that reads correctly at a desk and again at dinner does more work than two that manage one occasion. The trousers come out of a suitcase ready to wear and stay in rotation years after the reason for buying them has been forgotten.
