Portuguese Flannel Shirts and Shirt Jackets for Men

Portuguese Flannel is from Guimarães, a city in northern Portugal long known for its textile mills. Brothers António and Manuel Magalhães are the fourth generation of a fabric-making family there. Each shirt is made from cloth still produced the traditional way, and the reference point is the people who live and work along the region's coast and in its mountains.

The flannel itself gives the brand its name. The cotton is napped, brushed to lift the fibers, a slow finishing process that produces a soft, dense hand and cloth made to last. Button-ups in that brushed cotton flannel anchor the men's shirts at fig. once the weather cools, and lighter cotton and linen shirting covers the warmer months.

Portuguese Flannel overshirts and shirt jackets are cut from heavier cloth to go over another layer, and they work well as light jackets over a tee or a flannel button-up. Single pleat trousers apply the same fabric sourcing and wear easily with an untucked overshirt.

We stock Portuguese Flannel at fig. for the fabric first. A family that has made cloth for four generations brings knowledge of weight, weave, and a finish that shows the first time a shirt is worn, and more so after years of washing. Beyond flannel, the Magalhães brothers also work in corduroy, wool, and oxford cloth, so the shirts we bring in aren't limited to the fabric in the name.
